You can use sraight veg oil in some types of diesel engine(the diesel was invented to be able to do this) but for automotive purposes there are criteria that have to be met for an engine that reliably runs on veg oil. These are 1) Indirect injection. this is due to the nature of the injectors in an indirect injection engine being able to cope with the higher viscosity of the oil and not clogging up and landing you with large bills! 2) a heated fuel filter to warm the oil therefore thinning it before it enters the injection pump. Thick oil in an injection pump means a quickly worn out pump. 3)preferably any engine that uses a Bosch type injection pump( inline or rotary).
All of this rules out most, if not all engines produced from about 1996 onwards (veg oil into modern MPI engines won't go and will land you with a stuffed car!) but the european Peugeot 1.9 XUD type engine will run happily on it all day. Also older Mercedes diesels will last forever on veg oil with the inclusion of a heated fuel filer. What kind of engine do you have to have to use vegetable oil?
An semi hermetic compressor will run with vegetable oil.
It is similar to mineral oil although not compatible with any of the newer refrigerants and not recommended because it doesn't allow for oil return, back to the crankcase due to it's thickness and ability to mix with the refrigerant.Compressor life will be shortened though due to breakdown and a sludge like film which will accumulate throughout the system, mostly in the valve plate so I would not recommend using it.
I don't believe that there is an internal combustion engine capable of using vegetable oil. What kind of engine do you have to have to use vegetable oil?
No regular engine can burn straight veggie oil. You can convert the veggie oil to BIO-DIESEL and use it in ANY diesel car (no car conversion necessary).
The real problem is that you cannot get BIO-DIESEL at any gas stations (very few in Cali, but in general none everywhere else). So you have to MAKE bio-diesel in your garage.
Good Luck...
