Why do we use sodium benzoate, brominated vegetable oil, etc?

When I travel abroad to other countries, I read the ingredients on different drinks like coke, etc. They don't have sodium benzoate and other preservatives...why does the USA?Why do we use sodium benzoate, brominated vegetable oil, etc?
Because other countries are worse then America and don't care if those who drink it get sick. In America if i got sick from drinking Coke, i would sue them. This is why the add this stuff, to preserve freshness.
