Instead of WD-40, can you use vegetable/cooking oil on rusty metal skateboard parts?

If you want to get the rust off use vinegar let it soak for a few hours. Then put a light oil on it. I wouldn't use cooking oil as it's sticky with it dries but if that is all you have it's better than nothing. Transmission fluid, car oil would be better.

Don't use wd40 as a rust ';blocker'; as when it dries the rust really come back fast.Instead of WD-40, can you use vegetable/cooking oil on rusty metal skateboard parts?
my son did this, worked good untill the dogs licked it off.Instead of WD-40, can you use vegetable/cooking oil on rusty metal skateboard parts?
You can, but veg. oil is not a rust inhibitor nor will it break down the rust but it's OK to use as a temporary lubricant. 3 in 1 oil, motor oil, or transmission fluid would be better than veg. oil and transmission fluid will help break down the rust. Only problem is like veg. oil it's probably not going to last very long. GOOD LUCK!!!
You can, but using a petroleum based oil (motor oil, mineral oil, even Vaseline, or a synthetic motor oil) works better. They don't break down as quickly as vegetable oil.
Vegetable oil works fine as an exterior lubricant, but it is a bit thin. My son uses mineral oil on his.
cooking oil is not penetrating. try automatic transmission fluid.
